The main purpose of the group is to organise and provide educational, sporting, religious and social activities to local Muslim women, young girls and young boys up to the age of 10 years.
The project is to facilitate women only health information sessions in the local community. Members have expressed an interest in having awareness of health issues and to learn about different health topics that affect women. The group can explore how these services are provided by the NHS, and learn how to access them. The health information will also empower local women to gain a better understanding of various illness's and will enable them to learn the importance of lifestyle changes, health screening
and healthy eating.
The delivery of an equal and accessible health care service is of an importance to us all and these sessions will identify barriers, such as cultural, language and religious sensitivities, which can sometimes prevent women from accessing these services.
Hospital and PCT staff will get more involved with the local community and also learn about the health needs of local BME communities particularly women. This will enable them to take into account the differences in culture, language and lifestyles, of the local people and this will help them to provide services more appropriately to meet these needs.
Specialist speakers from George Eliot Hospital and Primary Care Trust, such as consultants, doctors and specialist nurses will be asked to deliver talks and information.
The aim will be to cover topics such as heart disease, blood pressure, stroke, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, mental illness, children and women's service and healthy eating.
The project will be carried out at the Coton Methodist Church, Edward Street, Nuneaton.
Nuneaton Muslim Women's Group were awarded £1,640 from the community Plan Fund 2008
