Revolve Youth Volunteering Allotment Project at Caldwell grange

Revolve encourages young people aged between 16-25 to get involved in voluntary activity in their local communities. The project works with young people from all backgrounds, with a special focus on working with young people who have extra support needs.

The project ‘Revolve Youth Volunteering (North Warwickshire CVS)' is about running an allotment project on shared land.

Land has been identified at Caldwell Grange residential home in Donnithorne Avenue, Nuneaton. The young people will be in charge of looking after and transforming it into an allotment. In return the home will be offered the opportunity to have some of the crops from the allotment once it is up and running.

The project will run weekly. The first stage will see the volunteers clearing and preparing the land for vegetable growing. They will then make four raised beds, suitable for wheelchairs and erect a shed for storage. Volunteers will be in charge of maintaining the beds and harvesting the crops on a weekly basis.

Residents from the home, who were once themselves keen gardeners, are keen to give advice on how to grow the crops. By creating the wheelchair friendly raised beds the residents will be able to get involved in the project with the young people and do some light gardening.

Some of the produce will be donated back to the residential home but some of the produce will be given to local people and families on benefits, and also to people on low incomes as part of the volunteering project.

In the summer/autumn young volunteers will put on an afternoon of entertainment for the residents. This will involve cooking a meal using the vegetables and fruit from the allotment.

The Revolve Youth Volunteering -Allotment Project received £695 from the Community Plan Fund 2008.
