The Rotary Club is an organisation of professional men and women united world wide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations. Rotarians give their services, playing an active role in the local community supporting many local worthy causes.
The Project is to put on a Crime Prevention and Safety Show for children. It is crucial that children are made aware of personal safety issues while at a tender age.
Delivering crime prevention and personal safety advice in a fun way, at the most critical ages of six and seven, provide the springboard required to assist in keeping them safe from harm, reducing the likelihood of criminal or anti social activity and contributing to their safety and well being.
The project contributes to them becoming responsible citizens of the future. Early intervention by way of crime prevention and safety education is an unquestioned and recognised essential requirement to reduce the likelihood of our children drifting into unsafe situations, anti social behaviour or criminal activity.
Year 2 children from Schools throughout Nuneaton and Bedworth will visit the Safety show during the week. Priority will be given to schools situated n our most deprived wards. Inter agency involvement from the Police, Fire, volunteers from St John Ambulance, WCC Road Safety, Central Networks, BHL Transport, Trading Standards, Health Promotions, and Nuneaton and Bedworth BC Leisure Services covering water safety issues, will all come together with Rotary volunteers, teach aspects of crime prevention and personal safety through a series of realistic sets. The sets depict the dangers facing young children. Hands on involvement by the children enhance their learning experience. With the involvement of the emergency services they are given the opportunity to make a call to the emergency services in the correct way.
The Crime Prevention and Safety Show is a fun way to deliver serious messages to the target audience. The teachers who attend the event, then build upon the experience when back in the classroom where project books of the shows contents are completed. Research following previous events has shown that this novel hands on approach to teaching such important messages has shown a very high knowledge retention rate amongst the children. This bodes well in their future life.
The Crime Prevention and Safety Show will be held from Tuesday 16 June - Thursday 18 June 2009 with days prior and after for set up and closure. The event will be held at the Weston Hall Hotel, Bulkington. A large open plan space is available where the old nightclub was once situated. The larger side car park will also be utilised for safety demonstrations.
The Rotary Club were awarded £1,700 from the Community Plan Fund 2008
